What is Lava™
Lava™ All-Ceramic System from 3M™ ESPE™ uses innovative digital technology and superior materials to help you produce high quality restorations for your patients. Using the speed and precision of CAD/CAM technology, it creates all-ceramic crown and bridge substructures with zirconia, an extremely strong, stable and fracture-resistant ceramic material. Preparations require removal of less tooth structure, and cementation accomodates even conventional techniques. Colorable frameworks that are thin and translucent ensure a natural and vital appearance.

Lava crowns & bridges are made with a zirconia framework which is a high-tech ceramic milled to a precision fit with Cad Cam technology. Lava Zirconia restorations are as strong as metal based crowns & bridges with many advantages:Dental crowns are made of a variety of materials. The ones that look like teeth, i.e not made of gold or metal, have a layer of porcelain that surrounds a core material. This core material can be a metal, such as gold, or can be a ceramic, such as alumina or zirconia. Lava is a brand of zirconia that makes up the core of the crown. The outside of the crown is a porcelain that is layered around to give the tooth vitality and shape. It is this porcelain that can chip or fracture, especially if you are a grinder. A better option can be using a full contour stained zirconia crown. These crowns are very strong, they are virtually indestructible. With proper staining they can be beautiful as well. I attached a video that demonstrates the strength of one such crown made of Prettau Zirconia compared to traditional porcelain over metal.

Lava crowns & bridges are made from zirconium oxide (zirconia). This is a ceramic material similar to the natural ceramic of your teeth. Once the zirconia has been made into a restoration it has such a natural appearance that it can hardly be distinguished from natural teeth
3M ESPE Lava Crowns and Bridges are Lava Zirconia-based restorations overlaid with an approved veneering ceramic. The zirconia copings and frameworks provide the strength while the veneering material provides the esthetics. The system is used for crowns, implant abutments, and bridges with a span of up to 48 mm in length. Tooth preparation is similar to PFM preparations with only slightly less reduction occlusally and circumferentially. Dies are scanned and then the copings or frameworks are milled and sintered. The zirconia substructure is colored with one of eight available shades, including a bleach shade, to coordinate with the final restorations. Lava restorations can be cemented with traditional or self-adhesive resin cements. Lava received a 95% clinical rating.
The Lava™ system from 3M ESPE is one of our most prestigious premium crown and bridge options. All Lava products are created using Lava™ Design software by 3M ESPE in conjunction with CAD/CAM technology. The CAM manufacturing process results in excellent fit, achieved due to the high milling accuracy and calculation of the sintering shrinkage via the system’s software. Lava™ closely mimics nature in appearance, with a choice of individually coloured, translucent frameworks in eight different shades. The fracture strength of zirconium oxide is many times higher than that of conventional all-ceramic materials, far exceeding the stress requirements of the oral cavity.
